Out with the old and in with the new. 2023 went quickly and 2024 snuck up on me before I even realized it. I officially have 5 years experience under my belt at trying the homestead life and boy has it been an amazing adventure!! There's been a lot of ups and downs and certainly a LOT of lessons learned moments. However, I wouldn't trade it for any other lifestyle. I have worked many desk jobs and have 15 years experience of teaching (yes I'm old) but farming is definitely my passion. Farming is a lot of things: hard work, heartache, relaxing, rewarding, stressful, and fun but I enjoy almost every minute of it (minus the effects of freezing temps on my critters). With that being said, decisions have to be made that best benefits your farm, your family, and the needs of the livestock. The beginning of a new year is great time to reflect and decide what changes need to be made. In 2023, I decided to down-size my goat herd and begin to focus on raising more livestock for consumption and I wanted to incorporate more "better practices" for my livestock and gardening. With the help of USDA, our local extension office, and Kentucky Small Fruit Initiative, I was able to acquire funds to help me install water systems for my: orchard, gardens, high tunnel, and livestock. I was also able to begin rotational grazing fencing systems. Lastly, I was able to attend several classes to learn better practices and care for my farm. Moving forward for 2024, I plan to add: cows, broiler chickens, mushrooms, nut trees, and add on to my orchard. I'm currently attending classes and hoping to get funds to incorporate Silvopasture practices and solar energy.
Thank you for joining our website and I look forward to doing business with you, sharing my new adventures, and answering any questions I can to help you with your homestead as well.
